Regarding the Statement by the Office of the Prosecutor General on the Identification of the Body of Viktoriia Roshchyna Based on DNA Analysis

04.24.25

The family of Viktoriia does not consider the DNA analysis results to be exhaustive; other investigative actions to identify the body are ongoing. We urge everyone to show respect towards the family and await the outcomes of additional examinations to fully clarify the circumstances.

The Office of the Prosecutor General reported: "As part of a molecular genetic examination, DNA samples were taken from both of Ms Viktoriia's parents. Based on the results of the analysis, the expert concluded that with more than 99 percent probability, the body belongs to Viktoriia."

We emphasise that the family does not consider the DNA test results to be final and is awaiting the findings of further examinations to confirm the identification. Viktoriia Roshchyna’s family has filed a motion requesting an additional examination for body identification.

According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, "This issue is currently being addressed in cooperation with our French colleagues to conduct a repeated identification of the body."

Even before the official statement by the Prosecutor General’s Office, on the morning of 24 April, several other sources made comments to the media that did not reflect or include the position of Viktoriia’s family. These statements were premature, based on incomplete information, and were disseminated by individuals not officially authorised to speak on the matter.

We call on representatives of the authorities, media, and civil society to show respect for Viktoriia’s family, rely on official and verified information, and act in the interests of victims, taking into account the potential impact such actions may have on judicial processes.

Recognising the sensitivity and public resonance of this case, we respectfully ask that the family and investigators be given time, and that all ongoing investigative actions related to the identification of the body be allowed to proceed without undue pressure.

Context: In August 2023, Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna was unlawfully detained by occupying forces in temporarily occupied territory.
