Justice for War Victims and Improving Respect for Fundamental Rights in Ukraine

About the Project:

The goal of the Project is to promote the effective implementation of EU standards in the field of victims’ rights, in particular Directive 2012/29/EU, taking into account the real-life experiences and needs of those affected by the consequences of armed conflict. Particular emphasis was placed on protecting the rights of family members of victims of enforced disappearances, as well as those who have been subjected to illegal detention, torture or cruel treatment.

Key results:

• continued support was provided for the complaint previously lodged with the UN Human Rights Committee regarding the unlawful detention of OSCE staff;
• provided legal advice and support to the family of the murdered journalist Viktoria Roshchina;
• few international advocacy events were carried out;
• up to 20 bilateral meetings were held with various stakeholders at both national and international levels;
• a jointly international statement calling for the release of OSCE staff members was prepared and published;
• International awareness of the illegal detention of three OSCE staff members and the need for their release was raised through advocacy campaigns and bilateral meetings;
• as part of international advocacy efforts, the position that the release of illegally detained OSCE staff members is a prerequisite for the introduction of future international mechanisms to monitor the ceasefire and the security situation in Ukraine was consistently promoted;
• the practice of strategically representing the interests of persons illegally deprived of their liberty as a result of the Russian Federation’s armed aggression, and their family members, has been strengthened.
